Abstract

In 2023, commitments made at the UN High-Level Meeting on the Fight Against Tuberculosis offered a renewed sense of hope and purpose after the COVID-19 pandemic.1 Nevertheless, tuberculosis disease remains the leading cause of death from a single infection, causing 1·3 million deaths per year in 2023.2 The global burden of tuberculosis disease remains grossly inequitable, with 80% of those affected by illness or death residing in low-income and middle-income countries.2 To realise the vision of a world free from tuberculosis by 2050, progress must be equitable, requiring advances in both high burden and low burden settings across and within countries.
